Training in Critical Thinking for Army Officers

A system of web-based training modules is being developed to enhance the critical thinking now required by Army officers. The system, under development for the Army Research Institute, will be incorporated into the curriculum at the Army Command and Staff College, Fort Leavenworth Kansas. Each module consists of training in basic concepts, followed by advanced training, contextual training, and performance-based exercises. State-of-the-art interplay of text messages, maps, tables, response-option boxes, and dialog displays are employed. The system, intended for use with Internet Explorer 5.0 browsers, uses a combination of html, cascading style sheets (CSS), and Java Script. Assessments of student critical thinking during training are obtained using a mix of skill-based, recall, and comprehension measures.
